Yep, It Still Exists, and It’s Still Not That Great: Thoughts on The Umbrella Academy Season 3

Yeah, I know, it’s been an entire week since season 3 dropped, but I just couldn’t be brought to care enough about it to watch it all in a day. It’s kind of a wonder how little Netflix seems to care about it compared to something like “Stranger Things”, between the episode lengths and the methods by which each show has been marketed and released. And with Netflix stock tanking and their binge model finally catching up with their bottom line, I wouldn’t be too surprised if this were the last season of the show. The cliffhangers were pretty slight, and any lingering questions were fairly easy to at least guess at. But while we still have content coming out from our friends at the Academy, let’s see how things went this season and see if I actually can find myself liking anything from it. I’m sure you can guess the answer by now.

Picard is a Synth, and So Are the Writers, Apparently: Thoughts on Season 2

CANON NOTE: This post will include perspectives from the “No Man’s Land” audio drama, even though it didn’t really add much. It was better than this season, that’s for sure.

Here we are, on the second season that I never thought would actually happen. I know I say this literally every time, but I’m just gonna breeze through this as quickly as possible, because I don’t really want to spend any more time on this show. The storytelling is so contrived that the writers must be synths, like Picard himself, because no human would ever actually think this constitutes as good storytelling, right? Anyway, let’s just do this.

Doctor Who Hates You, Whether You’re a Fan or an Activist: Thoughts on Legend of the Sea Devils

Okay, I know I always say that these review posts will be short, this one actually will be. (Editing note: I guess I had more to say than I initially thought. This post is not short.) And that’s because this special had precious little in the way of plot. But I know why you’re all here: you want to know if Thasmin progressed any further. Oh, just you wait, folks. All I’ll say right at the top here is that Chris Chibnall hates you. He does. He’s written almost every single script of Whitaker’s run, and they’ve all been absolute crap, from beginning to end, and he’s destroyed the most incredible TV series ever created. That takes a special kind of hatred. And he doesn’t just hate the fans. If you’re one of those activists who doesn’t see why Whovians can’t just let the Doctor be a woman and let some alphabet in, Chibnall doesn’t care about you either. We’re all hated equally from a show that historically promoted unity. Anyway, let’s just get this over with.

Star Trek: Discovery Also Does a Flux Story and is the Wokest Trash I’ve Ever Seen: Thoughts on Season 4

Look at that telling image: Michael Burnham stroking the captain’s chair. The chair is laden with gold because the showrunners know how much it means to us Trekkies to have a competent, likable, level-headed leader in that chair. But do they actually care about giving us one? Of course not. No one is a worse choice for captain than Michael. And I’m about to tell you just how bad of a choice she really is. Why is this show still going? I don’t know. But here’s a look at season 4, for what it’s worth.

How to Do Worse Than Your Worst: Thoughts on Doctor Who: Flux and Eve of the Daleks (The Whovian’s Nightmare)

Here we are again, folks. Another new year, and another wave of bad Doctor Who. I would like to point out that when Whittaker was first announced in 2017 (my gosh, it’s been that long) to be playing the Doctor, I wrote a post on this very blog that pretty much predicted the natural way this show would end; it’s right here, if you’re interested. There’s alot of stuff in there that’s oddly specifically accurate for having been written so long ago. But some of the stuff I got wrong: namely, that Chibnall and Whittaker wouldn’t be that much worse, just too different for the fandom to handle. But nope, they’ve been unimaginably worse. And then I mispredicted the end year of the show, which I put in 2020, and indeed, by all accounts, it should have. The story was trashed and the ratings were abysmal. And yet this corpse has dragged on. And what do we have to look at from 2021 and now the start of 2022? How about making the Timeless Children worse, like not just doubling down on it, but actually worsening its effects? Oh yes, dear readers, now I get the fun task of picking through series 13 and trying to remember if I can put all the important events in order for you. So buckle in, because this show is totally Fluxed… not that it gives any.

Riverdale Goes Straight Scifi and Reaches the Rerun Stage with 100 Episodes: Thoughts on Season… 6? I Guess?

How can it be? How have I actually sat through 100 episodes of the worst show I’ve ever laid eyes on in my entire life? How is it possible? Well, let’s just get through this five-episode nightmare and be done with it. It’s so wierd and doesn’t make any sense. Whatever, just click “continue reading” and let’s go already.

There Is Still Good Sci-Fi in This World, and It’s Called Lost in Space: Thoughts on Season 3

Well, here we are. It’s kind of sad: I’ve been watching “Lost in Space” since 2015 or 2016, starting with the classic series, moving into the movie, the unsold reboot pilot from 2004, and now, since 2018, the Netflix series. And while it’s sad that this story is over, I want to talk about what it got right and wrong, what changed from season 2, and what it means to make good science fiction. So let’s take our very last trip on the Jupiter 2 and take a look.

The Okayest Star Trek in the Kurtzman Lineup… We’re Doomed: Thoughts on Lower Decks Season 2

Oh yes, dear readers, that’s right: “Star Trek: Lower Decks” had a second season, and, since I’ve watched every bit of visual media within the Star Trek canon, I watched this too. As we continue down the path of Klutzman-Trek (yes, I did mean to spell it that way) until at least 2026, it’s an understatement to say that we shouldn’t expect much out of this once-great franchise anytime soon. But hey, since this is only the second show in the Kurtzman lineup to get a second season, maybe it did better. Maybe it learned from the mistakes of “Discovery” and actually got better… but probably not. Let’s jump back to the Cerritos and have a look.

Riverdale Doesn’t Want You to Watch It Anymore: Thoughts on Season 5

Oh my, dear readers. This season was all over the place. There’s just so much to go over. This may have been, and I don’t say this lightly, the worst season of “Riverdale” ever made. And I cannot wait to rant about all this with you. You know what, let’s compare what I said last May about season four with this season and see how much stayed consistent. I’ll bet anything it was whiplash inconsistency all the way through. What on earth happened to this beloved comic book series? What happened to this charming and booming franchise? How do you make something this awful and ruin an IP this badly? Well, we’re about to see how.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 has the Most Diversity… Among Fans Who Hate It: A Few Thoughts

And now we jump to the other science fiction franchise being demolished by its team and being sacrificed on the altar of agenda. Hooray: my favorite pastime! After enduring a grueling twenty-three straight weeks of Kurtzman Trek (seriously: “Lower Decks” started in August, if you can believe it), we’ve finally come to the end for a while, and thank goodness for it. It’ll be hard to organise the season’s plot points into coherent and linear thought. But I’ll try, so here goes.
